However, the high water levels also mean that some viewpoints may be inaccessible due to flooding, and activities like white water rafting may not be available.
In the dry season, from May to October, the falls take on a completely different character. The water levels are lower, offering a clearer view of the underlying rock formations and creating a series of smaller cascades that are equally beautiful in their own right.
This is also the best time of year for activities like bungee jumping and helicopter rides, as the clearer skies provide excellent visibility.
If you are a keen photographer, then the best time to visit Victoria Falls is during the late afternoon or early evening, as the setting sun casts a warm glow over the falls and creates beautiful silhouettes against the sky.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting during a full moon, you can experience the lunar rainbow, a rare and beautiful phenomenon where the mist from the falls creates a rainbow in the light of the moon.

Viewpoint 3
From this vantage point, one can marvel at the breathtaking sight of the Devil’s Cataract and Cataract Island. Despite its depth of 70 meters, the cataract boasts a remarkable volume of water, surpassing even the other four waterfalls during low water levels.
Separating the Devil’s Falls and the Main Falls is the Cataract Island, which occasionally witnesses an overflow of water during times of high water levels. The stunning natural beauty on display here is enough to leave any spectator in awe.
Viewpoint 4 and 5
From this point, the wondrous natural beauty of the Victoria Falls begins to unfold before one’s very eyes. The view afforded here is crystal clear, though one should prepare to get wet from the cascading spray of water.
To the left stands the majestic Devil’s Cataract, while on the right is the picturesque Cataract Island. And in the distance, the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls takes center stage, its grandeur inviting those who dare to behold its magnificence.
Viewpoint 6
As the main Falls approach, a deafening roar fills the air, as the smoke from the cascading water continues to envelop the surroundings. This vantage point offers a mesmerizing sight of the enchanting Victoria Falls, with the majestic Cataract Island standing directly opposite.
From here, one can relish in the unparalleled view of the awe-inspiring Devils Cataract and also catch a glimpse of the magnificent Livingstone statue.
Viewpoint 7
From this perspective, one could argue that this is the optimal vantage point from which to view Main Falls. The angled view offers a better perspective than a head-on view, as the spray from the falls is less likely to obstruct one’s vision.
The viewpoint itself is nestled amidst towering trees, which have adapted to the swampy terrain by growing broad, sturdy buttresses to support themselves on the waterlogged soil.
Main Falls is an impressive spectacle, measuring approximately 150 meters in width and 93 meters in depth. During the high-water season, it releases more water than any of the other four waterfalls in the area, making it an especially awe-inspiring sight.
Viewpoint 8
When the river is in full flood, catching a glimpse of Main Falls can be a real challenge. The deluge of water creates a thick mist that shrouds the entire area, obscuring the view and making it difficult to see anything at all.
However, on a clear day, the view of Main Falls is simply breathtaking. The sheer power and majesty of the falls is evident from every angle, but the best view is arguably from the front, where the full force of the water can be seen cascading down into the pool below. This is one of my favorite viewpoints of the waterfall.
Despite the occasional difficulty in seeing the falls during high-water season, visitors to this natural wonder are always rewarded with an unforgettable experience. Whether obscured by mist or in full view, Main Falls is a sight that never fails to inspire wonder and awe.
Viewpoint 9 and 10
Viewpoints 9 and 10 offer stunning views of the Main Falls, but they come with a catch. From these viewpoints, the falls are shrouded in a constant spray, making it difficult to get a clear and unobstructed view.
Taking photographs from these vantage points can be particularly challenging, as the mist can obscure the lens and result in blurry or hazy images. It’s a bit of a gamble, as one can never be certain of the outcome.
However, those who are willing to take the risk may be rewarded with unique and breathtaking shots of the Main Falls that few others have captured.
Despite multiple visits to the Falls, I have refrained from capturing images or videos from Viewpoints 9 and 10 owing to the relentless spray from the falls.
Viewpoint 11
From this vantage point, one can gaze upon the Devil’s Pool and Livingstone Island in Zambia. Despite the view being partially obscured by the spray of cascading water, this location offers a unique perspective that is shared with viewpoints 8, 9 and 10.
However, in high waters, visibility may be limited, yet one can still catch a glimpse of the grandeur of the Main Falls, making this spot well worth a visit.
Viewpoint 12
This scenic location offers breathtaking views of both David Livingstone Island and Horse Shoe Falls on either side.
Legend has it that when David Livingstone first laid eyes on the falls, he stood in the exact opposite spot and attempted to measure their height by lowering a makeshift line with bullets and small square cloths attached, each cut into inches.
Viewpoint 13
As one approaches Viewpoint 13, a breathtaking view of the Horseshoe Falls comes into sight. The falls are a staggering 95 meters deep and during the High Water season, visitors can expect to be drenched by heavy showers. It is recommended that visitors bring a raincoat to stay dry while taking in the stunning view.
However, for adventurous travelers like myself a raincoat may not be neccessary. The sensation of getting drenched is uniquely refreshing on a hot afternoon, adding to the beauty of the experience.
Legend has it that the name “Horse Shoe” comes from the shape of the fissure in the river that flows towards David Livingstone Island, which resembles the shape of a horseshoe when viewed in cross-section.
During the low water season, View Point 13 is usually dry, making it an ideal time for visitors to assess the depth of the falls. The dry cliffs also offer a sanctuary for birds such as swallows, swifts, and martins to build their nests.
This provides a wonderful opportunity for birdwatchers to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
Viewpoint 14
The vantage point offers a breathtaking view of the Rainbow Falls, the deepest and most majestic of them all, plunging 108 meters below. Yet, despite its natural grandeur, the spot is fraught with danger, shielded only by a flimsy barrier that leaves visitors vulnerable to its treacherous charms, no matter the season.
Slippery and slick during the wet months, and equally hazardous in the dry seasons, the Gorge demands caution and respect from all who dare to venture near.
Viewpoint 15
This viewpoint popularly known as the danger point and it poses a significant threat, which is amplified during high water levels. Visitors are always advised to stay away from the edge to avoid accidents that could potentially be fatal.
The danger is further compounded by the slippery surface when it is wet, making it very easy to slip and fall.
Those who dare to climb the danger point should exercise extreme caution. Loose rocks and footholds are a common occurrence, and one misstep could lead to a fatal fall into the deep Batoka Gorge below.
From the safety of the observation point, one can appreciate the magnificent view of the Eastern Cataract, which lies 101 meters below on Zambia’s side of the Zambezi River.
The waters from Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Horse Shoe Falls, and Rainbow Falls all flow towards the east. In contrast, the water that plunges directly into the Eastern Cataract flows west.
The Eastern Cataract and the other falls blend at the danger point to form a ‘boiling pot.’ The currents then flow towards the south through the narrow gap in the basalt rock, producing a remarkable sight.
Viewpoint 16
The Victoria Falls Bridge, a stunning feat of engineering that spans the Zambezi River and offers breathtaking views of one of the waterfalls is viewpoint 16. The bridge took two years to construct, with work completed in 1905, and remains a testament to the ingenuity and skill of its builders.
Rising to a height of approximately 111 meters above the river, give or take depending on the water level, and stretching for a length of roughly 198 to 200 meters, the Victoria Falls bridge is not only a marvel of design but an integral part of a rail network that was originally intended to connect the coal fields of Hwange, Zimbabwe, with the copper deposits of Zambia.
This ambitious project was part of Cecil Rhodes’ grand vision to link Cape to Cairo through a vast network of railroads.
Today, the Victoria Falls Bridge is a popular destination for adventure seekers and thrill enthusiasts, who come from all over the world to experience the rush of bungee jumping or bridge swinging from its towering heights.
